Five Accessorizing Tips From Watching Top Celebrity Red Carpet Appearances

Celebrities and their red carpet looks often serve as inspiration for the everyday woman dressing for special occasions. While most don't have the resources, contacts or pull to manage their exact ensembles, their jewelry can be used as the focus for a variety of style tips.

Allow the Gown to Steal the Show: Tiny Fey
On the Emmy red carpet, actress Tina Fey donned a bright blue Narciso Rodriguez dress complemented with jewelry by Fred Leighton. The assortment included gold Victorian pendant earrings, a gold, sapphire and diamond 1940s-style bracelet, and a diamond, sapphire and onyx Art Deco platinum ring.

The vibrant shade of blue offered by the gown makes up most of the statement here. Because of this, only the few subtle pieces she wore were necessary to finish the look, wearing the bracelet and ring on the same hand.

Style Hair to Complement Head Jewelry: Naomi Watts
At the 85th Annual Academy Awards, Naomi Watts donned a metallic steel grey Armani Privé dress. To set the dress off she paired it with platinum drop earrings by Neil Lane. The earrings weighed in at a hefty 20 carats.

She kept the sparkling look simple by pulling her hair up in a wavy updo. This elegant style draws attention to the dazzling pieces along each side of the face. The star set the earrings off with a diamond encrusted bracelet also from the Neil Lane Collection.

Add Unexpected Pieces: Anna Faris
At the Emmys, Anna Faris found a way to be playful but still classy by adding a colorful brooch to her look. With a bright yellow Monique Lhuillier gown, she added an emerald Fred Leighton salamander brooch to the back. Continuing with the pop of color, she included a matching gold, emerald, diamond and pearl bracelet.

Other Fred Leighton pieces included 19th Century-style gold and pearl earrings along with an antique gold diamond ring. The pieces keep the overall look simple with sudden pops of excitement on the dress, hands and ears.

Try Something Different: Necklaces Down the Back
Also at the Academy Awards, stylist Rachel Zoe made an influence by bringing back a vintage style. Actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway displayed a similar trend in the way they wore their shimmering designer necklaces. For Jennifer Lawrence the stylist provided a Chopard strand over her Dior gown. For Anne Hathaway, she added a Tiffany & Co. necklace to her straight Prada gown.

Instead of styling the pieces the traditional way, Zoe opted to turn them backwards for both ladies. This creates a beautiful dangling effect down the back for added flair in an unexpected place.

Match Jewelry to Gown Color: Kerry Washington
Emmy winner Kerry Washington stepped onto the red carpet in an elaborate pale rose gown. The dress was outlined in large flower details from bust to toe. To keep her jewelry subtle, the actress wore rose gold flower cluster earrings with pink diamonds.

To keep her jewelry coordinated with the gown color, she also included a ring with pink diamonds along with a Movado watch made of 18kt rose gold.

Focus on one tip at a time and avoid going for too many pieces of jewelry with one look. The dress will still gain the most attention, but for many the jewelry is the most exciting part of an ensemble.
